Preparations on track to host Windwards basketball
ST. GEORGE’S, Grenada – Work is moving ahead at a feverish pace towards the completion of all preparations for the successful hosting of the 2010 Windward Islands Senior Male Basketball Championships, scheduled to be played at the Tanteen Courts in Grenada July 01 – 05, 2010. A new synthetic surface have been aid at the Tanteen Courts, part of the approximately EC$300,000.00 budget being spent by the Grenada Basketball Association. This year’s tournament will be the culmination of months of efforts led by the Grenada Basketball Association, aimed at the revitalization of the Windward Islands Senior Male Basketball Championships. The Windward Islands Senior Male Basketball Championships was last held about ten years ago in Saint Lucia, which was won by Grenada. The head coach of that successful Grenada team was Fitzgerald Joseph, with Nigel McKie as his assistant.read more
US Virgin Islands finishes seventh with a dramatic win over Mexico

SAN ANTONIO (FIBA-Americas U18 Championship for Men) - US Virgin Islands finished in seventh place of the FIBA-Americas U18 Championship for Men as they defeated Mexico 89-86 in overtime. Merwin Potter scored 22 points and Aaron Brown 20 for USVI who only won one game in this tournament. "We did not want to come out in last place we just wanted to finish strong," said Aaron Brown after the game. USVI dominated the rebounds during the game but had problems handling the ball and that gave life to Mexico who was led by Kevin Acosta. The first quarter finished 24-16 and at halftime the lead was 42-32. Then in the second half Mexico was led by Kevin Acosta from long distance and pressure on the ball to get more opportunities. The third quarter finished 51-49 in favor of USVI. Both teams traded the lead in the final quarter and Mexico had the lead after a three by Kevin Acosta with 21.8 seconds left to put the score 73-72 and then a free throw by Juan Rangel placed them up 74-72.

Uruguay dominates Puerto Rico to finish in fifth place

SAN ANTONIO (FIBA-Americas U18 Championship for Men) - Uruguay dominated Puerto Rico 78-64 to finish fifth in the FIBA-Americas U18 Championship for Men. Mathias Calfani netted 32 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Uruguay while Ivan Loriente followed with 22. Both Loriente and Calfani play for Bigua in Uruguay and led their national team during this tournament. "Before the game I spoke to my coach  to prepare mentally and play hard. I wanted to take advantage of the energy that came with the game. It served to unite the team and it was really important to win today," said Mathias Calfani. The Uruguayans dominated most of the game with an excellent defense and team play on both sides helped Calfani. Calfani also made some baskets in second chances where of his 14, 7 of them were offensive. The first quarter finished 21-19 and at halftime Uruguay was up 39-29. Calfani already had 20 points at the half.

Brazil Pounds Puerto Rico 78-53
SAN ANTONIO (FIBA-Americas U18 Championship for Men) - As expected when two of the top basketball programs in the FIBA Americas zone go up against each other, Brazil (1-0) and Puerto Rico’s (0-1) U18 national teams produced a very physical battle. However, Puerto Rico proved to be no match for the strong Brazil squad as the South Americans prevailed for the 78-53 victory in opening round action at the 2010 FIBA-Americas U18 Championship on Saturday afternoon at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.  Brazil was paced to the victory by 20 points, 12 rebounds and eight blocked shots from 7-0 center Lucas Noguiera, who came off the bench to shoot 8-of-9 from the field and 4-of-5 from the line in 19 minutes of action. “I always put on my jersey to play well,” said Noguiera. “I always expect to play really well but I did not think I would do this well because Puerto Rico is such a hard team. ..read more
Canada Earns 2011 FIBA U19 World Championship Berth After Its 100-83 Win Over Puerto Rico
SAN ANTONIO (FIBA-Americas U18 Championship for Men) - Canada continued to roll with a 100-83 victory over a scrappy Puerto Rico team Sunday in a preliminary round game of the FIBA Americas U18 Championship for Men at Bill Greehey Arena in San Antonio, Texas.   “We have always had tough games with Puerto Rico whether it’s the senior men’s, or the junior  team,  we know each other pretty well, and we play the same style,” said Canada head coach Greg Francis. “We really try to get after it. I take my hat off to them.   We have some pretty good players, but they [Puerto Rico] played really hard.”  The Canadians (2-0) wrap up group play Monday by taking on Brazil at 1 p.m. Central Time. Puerto Rico (0-2) meets Uruguay at 3 p.m. With the win Canada assured itself a place in this tournament’s semifinal round and a trip to next summer’s FIBA U19 World Championship as the top four finishers in San Antonio get to punch their ticket to the U19 Worlds. ...read more
